The Balanced Minimum Evolution Problem
A phylogeny is an unrooted binary tree that represents the evolutionary relationships of a set of n species. Phylogenies find applications in several scientific areas ranging from medical research, to drug discovery, to epidemiology, to systematics, and to population dynamics. In such applications the available information is usually restricted to the leaves of a phylogeny and is represented by...
متن کاملOn the Uniqueness of Balanced Minimum Evolution
Minimum evolution is a class of parsimonious distance-based phylogenetic reconstruction methods. One noteworthy example is balanced minimum evolution (BME), which is the theoretical underpinning of the neighbor-joining algorithm. The robustness of a minimum evolution method can be captured in part by a statistic known as its L∞ radius. BME is known to have L∞ radius 1 2 , the best possible. We ...
متن کاملApproximating the balanced minimum evolution problem
We prove a strong inapproximability result for the Balanced Minimum Evolution Problem. Our proof also implies that the problem remains NP-hard even when restricted to metric instances. Furthermore, we give a MST-based 2-approximation algorithm for the problem for such instances.
متن کاملTheoretical foundation of the balanced minimum evolution method of phylogenetic inference and its relationship to weighted least-squares tree fitting.
Due to its speed, the distance approach remains the best hope for building phylogenies on very large sets of taxa. Recently (R. Desper and O. Gascuel, J. Comp. Biol. 9:687-705, 2002), we introduced a new "balanced" minimum evolution (BME) principle, based on a branch length estimation scheme of Y. Pauplin (J. Mol. Evol. 51:41-47, 2000). Initial simulations suggested that FASTME, our program imp...
متن کاملOptimal solutions for the balanced minimum evolution problem
Phylogenies are trees representing the evolutionary relationships of a set of species (called taxa). Phylogenies find application in several scientific areas ranging from medical research to drug discovery, epidemiology, systematics and population dynamics. In these applications the available information is usually restricted to the leaves of a phylogeny and is represented by molecular data ext...
